I have been a happy customer of Honda for it’s Activa scooter. After using it for more than 3 years, I was in the market last week to look for the alternatives to Activa that can replace my current 2010 gear-less scooter which ran around 20K kilometers. My dad sold it for Rs.25K.
I visited showrooms and checked scooty products from several brands like Suzuki, Honda, Hero and TVS. Sorry Mahindra, Duro wasn’t in my radar at all. I also didn’t consider TVS Wego because of it’s girlish look otherwise all-metal body won my heart.
Hero Maestro: It’s all plastic (or as they say ABS or Fibre) in the body, my dad wanted metallic body for at least essential body parts. Otherwise the scooty looked great to me. It was available off-the-shelf with no waiting period.
Honda Activa: A tried and tested reliable product from Honda. The recently launched HET version isn’t a major upgrade in design and ride quality departments. I already had it previously so this time I wanted try something new. Waiting period was 35 days, price quoted was Rs.57K.
Suzuki Access: Again a tried and tested product from Suzuki doing good numbers in sales perspective. 125cc engine is what impressed me and made this scooter standout from 110cc scooter market. Since this scooty has already been in the market for quite sometime and body was plastic, I moved on. Waiting period was 35 days and price quoted was 55K.
TVS Jupiter: I was impressed with the additional and first-in-class features provided on this scooter. The front panel with indicator lights in them is all plastic. The major features provided are Pass by switch (a very useful feature to me), mobile charger in the under the seat storage space (It’s optional – there’s nothing, not even a socket to plugin the car charger but ability to install), accessible kick start (In Activa, I needed to get off the scooter to kick in case the self start didn’t work), LED tail lamp, twin city lamps, external fuel lid, econometer and a lot more. I visited a TVS dealer in Saraswati Vihar, Delhi to test drive and book the Jupiter but to my surprise there was no test drive vehicle to feel the scooter. No hard copy of brochure or technical specifications was provided. I was quoted Rs.51K on-road price with standard accessories, helmet, insurance and all the taxes.
The executive attending me told the waiting period of 25 days, I wanted to get hands on this scooter as soon as possible and asked for possibilities. The sales guy insisted me to get a special accessory package worth Rs.2900 to get the scooter little bit earlier (within 20 days). Which I agreed upon and that made the final amount to Rs.53,900. I then proceeded with drawing a Rs.5000 check as a booking amount and came back home with an imperfect dealer experience.
